Its Goodbye to the Butler.

Say good bye to the butler - Jeeves is being retired as Ask.com roll out their re-branding. As part of their re-branding exercise Ask.com have rolled-out a whole host of new features.

The New Homepage has a sleek new design, which is cleaner and more straightforward. But more importantly contains shortcuts to more than 20 new search tools, including maps, images, weather, dictionary, local and desktop search. Due to a hectic weekend we at JU2 towers have yet to play around with any of these features but we did notice a new blogging tool. We’ll keep you posted.

It will be interesting to see if Ask benefit from the re-brand. Jeeves the character had high recognition. A lot of the original appeal to Ask was in its branding of a user friendly face to ask a question of. This gradually faded, but in the infancy of the Internet was an important difference to other engines - it was the peoples search engine - users liked the idea of asking Jeeves - "What shall I cook tonight?", "Whats on at the cinema?"

Ask are trying to move away from this old image, focusing on the power of Teoma, the search technology that powers it...However, with no major competitive difference and features offered by other engines I believe it will be hard for them to keep up. On the plus side, the weather, dictionary and stocks and shares tools are quick and easy!
